The Prospective Marriage & Temporary Partner Visa

The Prospective Marriage & Temporary Partner Visa

Australia offers a wide range of family visas designed to cover most situations. While not exhaustive, we highlight that the majority of the more commonly chosen options fall within the Family Category.

The Prospective Marriage Visa.

This visa allows individuals to travel to Australia to marry their intended partner. It is a temporary visa, valid for nine months. Applications must be lodged while you are outside Australia, and you must also be offshore at the time the visa is granted. Your marriage can take place in any country—it is not required to occur in Australia.

The Temporary Partner Visa.

This visa lets you live in Australia if you are married to, or in a de facto relationship with:

  • an Australian citizen

  • a permanent resident of Australia

  • an eligible New Zealand citizen.

In certain situations, the visa may still be granted if your relationship has ended. The temporary Partner visa is the initial step towards obtaining a permanent Partner visa. You must be in Australia both when lodging your application and when a decision is made on it.

You only need to submit one application covering both the temporary and permanent visas, with a single application fee. The process takes place in two stages, generally around two years apart.
